Naramore Photo Legal Tender Set

# 6260
Complete Legal Tender Note 9-Piece Set >SOLD<

We are pleased to offer a set of all nine photographic images of the first issue of Legal Tender Notes produced by Robert C. Naramore. Naramore produced these photos, along with photos of proofs of the nine first issue national bank notes, in 1866 under special permission of the United States Treasury and an act of Congress. They were usually issued affixed to heavy card stock. This set was expertly removed from the cardstock backings. The photos measure approximately 1.5" x3.5" and are as-new with original brightness and free of notable distractions except for a small stain at the upper left of the last example and a small tear in the $20.

The purpose of granting the exclusive limited time permission to photograph the notes was in support of Naramore's production of his counterfeit detector reference. Counterfeit detectors had been around for many years, going back to colonial times. However, rather than printed images, this project utilized the relatively new technology of photography. Naramore's United States Treasury and National Bank Note Detector (Bridgeport, CT, 1866) is the earliest use of photographic technology in numismatic literature. This historic set will make a wonderful adjunct to a collection of early United States paper money.  They include representations of the extremely rare and unobtainable higher denomination notes from $50 to $1000.
