Because of paper shortages in the south during the Civil War, notes like this were printed using leftover scrap from sheets of prior issues of currency. In this case, the paper used was of the now popular Merchants' Bank in Macon, Georgia with the cherubs and coins vignette. The Macon notes were not uniface in that they had the denomination printed in block letters on the back. This example shows parts of the words "two" and "three" resulting from the use, turned 90 degrees, of the multi-denomination Merchants' sheet.
