Rare Deep Red Consecutive Pair Available

1864 $500 Confederate States of America, Type-64; Cr.489B, PF-3. This is the rare deep red type consistent with the high serial numbers. XF/AU with only two vertical folds from Uncirculated. Towards the end of production, the red ink supply was totally consumed before a new supply finally arrived in Columbia, South Carolina in time to complete the printing of the final notes in the issuance. Not only are these notes more scarce and more valuable than the earlier notes, they are a lot more esthically appealing.

We have rarely had examples of the deep red variety and this is the first time that we have been able to offer a consecutive pair and are a little reluctant to break them apart. But, we recognize that it is a significant purchase for a collector to acquire just one high grade example. So, we are offering them separately while offering a discount for the purchase of both.

This is the highest denomination CSA note issued for circulation and the only $500 since the interest bearing Montgomery note of 1861. The note was payable to the bearer on demand "Two Years after the Ratification of a Treaty of Peace between the Confederate State & The United States". It was printed in Columbia, SC by Keatings & Ball. Due to a shortage of red ink during the printing process progressively less was used in the press until near the end of production when a new supply was received. This resulted in a wide varience of intensity of the background color.

The left design bears the popular Confederate Battle Flag behind the Great Seal of the Confederacy, which includes George Washington on his horse surrounded by the motto "Deo Vindice" ("God Vindicates"). The right design bears a portrait of "Stonewall" Jackson, the only Confederate general appearing on CSA paper money.
