CSA, T64 (489) 1864 $500 Confederate States of America, VF, 6987

# 2683

1864 $500 Confederate States of America, Type-64; Cr.489, relatively stronger pink coloring. A strong Very Fine, serial number 6987.

This is the highest denomination CSA note issued for circulation and the only $500 since the interest bearing Montgomery note of 1861. The note was payable to the bearer on demand "Two Years after the Ratification of a Treaty of Peace between the Confederate State & The United States". It was printed in Columbia, SC by Keatings & Ball.

The left design bears the popular Confederate Battle Flag behind the Great Seal of the Confederacy, which includes George Washington on his horse surrounded by the motto "Deo Vindice" ("God Vindicates"). The right design bears a portrait of "Stonewall" Jackson, the only Confederate general appearing on CSA paper money.
