The First National Bank of Amenia, New York, Charter #706, 1865 $1 Original Series, Choice Very Fine. Signed by Gail Borden of Borden Dairy fame as Vice President of the bank.

One of our favorites, we bought this note from a Borden decendent some years ago. It subsequently found its way into the great John Whitney Walter collection and just recently was reacquired by us. Although appearing to have been circulated, we were told that it was never used in commerce but was kept in the family for multiple generations. It was apparently kept as more of a novelty and conversation piece rather than a collectible of historical significance worthy of careful handling. In spite of the half-dozen or so folds, the note exhibits bright inks and strong signatures that appear to have been recently penned. A previous small tear near the top center of the note has since been professionally repaired. It was also certified and graded by Paper Money Guarantee as a Choice Very Fine 35. Notations on the back indicate "minor repair" and "John Whitney Walter Collection".

Gail Borden was the distinguished American that invented sweetened condensed milk, receiving a patent in 1862 while operating a factory in Amenia, New York. Also known for many other inventions and accomplishments, including many from his time in Texas. His biography is worth researching and this note is worthy of a museum. We know of only one other note bearing his signature and since Mr. Borden died in 1874 in Texas, we doubt that he had much opportunity to fill the need to sign the First National Bank of Amenia as Vice President. Although we have yet to uncover any data relating to the extent of Gail Borden's administrative activities with the bank, we understand it was limited in nature.
