Franklin Pierce - 1856 Land Grant Awarded to War of 1812 Veteran (73242)

After much delay, Congress passed legislation (in 1850) providing compensation to the veterans of the War of 1812 (or their heirs). It was in the form of grants of land. This document is a copy of Warrant #73242 issued by the United States of America and bearing the secretarial signature of President Franklin Pierce for his approval of the granting to Elam Greely of 40 acres located in the vicinity of Stillwater, Minnesota Territory. The grant, or warrant, was approved on June 16, 1856. This copy includes an attached certification of the General Land Office, Department of the Interior, signed by Commissioner Binger Herman and dated September 13, 1899. The certification bears the embossed seal of the United States General Land Office and a hand-cancelled Series of 1898 Ten Cent Documentary (United States Internal Revenue) Stamp.
