Missing Second Print Error, $1 San Francisco FRN, GemCU, L98875306C, PMG65-EPQ

The front design of this dollar is completely missing, except for the seals and serial numbers. This happens when the ink register runs dry and is not replenished during the second printing pass. This exceptional Gem Uncirculated example, certified by Paper Money Guarantee, of one of our very favorite error types. We have offered examples of this dramatic error only seldom because of the scarcity of opportunity for us to acquire them.

The back of notes are printed first. The stack of uniface printed sheets is then turned over and run through the press a second time to receive the printing of the primary front design. After another flip, the sheets are fed again, face up, to receive a third printing that consists of the two seals and the serial numbers. The BEP does have examiners to inspect for and remove mistakes. An error of this type indicates at least two missed opportunities to keep the incomplete notes from being released.
