Fascinating and Rare Pre-Civil War Black History Document

Prior to emancipation and the end of the Civil War, freed slaves, born-free blacks, and generally free persons of color in the South, were required to carry passes in order to prove their status upon request. We recently obtained an historical artifact of the period.

This document is the registration paper issued by the City of Richmond on February 21, 1853 to 23 year old James Ricks, "a black man", "born free in this city", etc., certified by the Court Clerk (with seal) and signed by or for the Mayor of Richmond. It is also bears the signature of Mr. Ricks on the back.
