Fr.2073-C, BEP $80,000 Brick Packaging Label, 1981 Philadelphia $20 FRNs, C-B Block

Prior to the advent in the late 1980s of the modern redesigned adhesive bar coded labels, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing would package newly printed notes in groups of 4000, called a "brick". The bricks were assembled for shipping sandwiched between thin plywood boards and a label was affixed to one end with information identifying the contents by quantity (4000), Federal Reserve district, series date, denomination and dollar value, and the beginning serial number.

We are pleased to be able to offer this example of a 4000 note BEP brick label still attached to its board. Interesting conversation pieces and companions to a paper money collection, these labels are surprisingly affordable given their degree of scarcity.
